PUBLIC HEARING ON A "CERTIFICATE OF NEED" FOR THE CENTER TO BE HELD ON OCTOBER 12TH

CENTER EXPECTED TO COST $16.3 MILLION

It’s a successful and busy time right now for Pardee Hospital UNC Health Care, particularly in the Mills River community. And soon the hospital will likely be getting busier.

The hospital will need what’s known as a “certificate of need” from the state before it can proceed with plans to build a new $16.3 million ambulatory surgery center in the heart of Mills River.. Pardee plans to “move” two of its operating suites from the main campus on Fleming Street to a 20 acre site the hospital purchased for $1.75 millon several years ago from the Moore family on Highway 280, or the Boyleston Highway, in Mills River.

That site had been used for agriculture in the past, and is located on the east side of Highway 280 in between Valley Ag and Quality Oil, and is on the opposite side of the five lane highway from Ingles and Pardee’s new Urgent Care facility that opened earlier this summer.

In addition to the two operating suites, the new facility will also include two “procedure” rooms that can be used for a variety of surgical and other medical needs.

It is possible that part of that large site, with access directly onto Highway 280, may be developed by Pardee for other uses at some point in the future, but hospital officials told WHKP News some time back that both the hospital’s and the Mills River community’s needs are being evaluated....and it has not yet been determined what else the site may be used for.

As part of the process of determining whether or not to grant that “certificate of need”, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will be holding a public hearing on October 12 to receive public input and comments on the proposed ambulatory surgical center.

The hearing will be held at 10am on Friday October 12 in the Kaplan Auditorium of the main Henderson County Public Library on Washington Street.

Written comments may be mate to the Healthcare Planning and Certificate of Need Section no later that 5:30 pm on October 1st. Comments can be made as an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

No date has been set for the state to act on Pardee UNC Health Care’s request.

In addition to the proposed new surgery center and the Urgent Care facility, Pardee also operates Mills River Family Health Center, also on Highway 280 and in front of the former Food Lion grocery store
