50 MILE DETOUR MAY BE REQUIRED TO GET AROUND IT
50 TO 60 TREES INVOLVED, DOWN, BLOCKING THE ROAD
Days after record setting heavy rain and flooding that devastated parts of the Edneyville/Bat Cave/Chimney Rock/Lake Lure and Polk County areas, officials reported Tuesday morning that a landslide has forced the closing of NC Highway 9 near Bat Cave.
The landslide is near the intersection of Highway 9 and Shumont Rosd.
The slide is described as "massive", with 75 to 100 feet of the road covered and some 50 to 60 trees are said to be down and involved in the slide.
No information was available Tuesday morning concerning when the slide would be cleared and the road re-opened
Motorists are being advised to take alternate routes.
The heavy rain that produced the flooding and mud and land slides started on May 15th and the days that followed have been confirmed to be the second heaviest "rainy spell" in recorded local weather history in the Henderson County area
