You'd think after scoring more than 2,000 career points and earning a starting spot four years in a row for a program that won 86% of its games would garner a ton of attention.

Until this week, it had not for Hendersonville senior guard Dwight Canady.

The scoring machine (26.1ppg as a senior) earned a spot on the North Carolina roster for the Carolinas Classic All-Star Basketball Game.

"I feel like Dwight has a lot to prove," said Hendersonville head coach Marvin Featherstone. "He feels like he's been overlooked and so I think he's going to go out and surprise some people. Maybe open some eyes of some coaches that haven't seen him yet."

Canady is believed to be the first Hendersonville player selected for the game, which is preparing for its 23rd rendition. North Buncombe's Ren Dyer was the last WNC player to earn a spot in the prestigious game back in 2019. The last Henderson County player to make it was in 2017 when North Henderson's Austin Nelson was selected.

Prior to that only one player was selected from 2012-16. Canady, and many others, believe mountain talent is often overlooked and he hopes to help change some minds.

"Just show that we can compete," stated Canady. "We're not scared, not going to back down from anybody and just show that up in the mountains we can compete."

Murphy's Torin Rogers will represent WNC in the girls game, which starts the Saturday festivities at 6:00pm. The boys will follow, tentatively at 8:00pm.
