The Hendersonville Police Department, in collaboration with STAND T.A.L.L. – Thank a Local Lawman©, has taken an important step in promoting firearm safety by providing handgun lockboxes to its officers for secure storage at home.

Recognizing the critical need for safe firearm practices, Police Chief Bair Myhand emphasized the department's commitment to this cause. “Firearm safety is everyone’s responsibility," said Chief Myhand. "And now, we can show that we take firearm safety seriously too. Hopefully, other gun owners will follow our lead.”

This initiative aligns with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)'s call for law enforcement agencies to enhance firearm safety measures. Until now, the department did not have a standard solution for officers to safely store their issued handguns at home. The newly provided lockboxes offer a secure yet accessible option, ensuring both safety and readiness.

After researching various options, the department selected the StopBox Pro as the most effective and affordable choice, costing approximately $60 per unit. To make this initiative possible, the department partnered with STAND T.A.L.L., which generously covered two-thirds of the total cost. This non-profit helps raise funds for Western North Carolina law enforcement agencies to fulfill unfunded training, equipment and programming needs.

Ron Kauffman, president of STAND T.A.L.L. said, “Our Mission is to support requests for the unbudgeted needs of law enforcement. When Chief Myhand contacted me, I immediately asked our Board to approve funding for the gun safe request for the Hendersonville Police Department. Approval was given, and we are happy to help promote gun safety and support the department in leading the way as a role model for gun safety within the community.”

The Hendersonville Police Department is proud to lead by example in firearm safety and grateful for STAND T.A.L.L.'s support in making this initiative a reality.
