On Monday, Feb. 24, Bat Cave Baptist Church became the epicenter of Henderson County's Helene response.

A resource fair took place all afternoon followed by a special meeting of the Henderson County Commissioners.

“Being here to hear their issues and do what we can to kind of bridge the gaps that have been created between local, state and federal government, that’s our intention here tonight,” Henderson County Manager, John Mitchell said.

More than 100 people attended the special meeting; many stood up and asked questions or gave comments on wide-ranging topics from debris removal to tourists on private property.

Public comment lasted more than an hour.

“Our community’s pretty tight and this is part of it," Bat Cave resident, Thomas Royal said. “It helps us, otherwise we’d be left in the dark. We’d be like mushrooms.”

Royal lives in Bat Cave and is still having issues with AT&T and his retaining wall.

Royal and other citizens also came by earlier for the resource fair.

“We got help downstairs with different things through FEMA and a lot of people bad mouth FEMA which is too bad," Royal said. "I think they’ve done right by us.”

Elected leaders assured attendees that decisions made in Henderson County would continue to be completed publicly.
