Governor Roy Cooper was joined here in western North Carolina by top cabinet representatives like Administration Secretary Machelle Sanders, who visited Safelight in Hendersonville Monday morning, and Office of State Human Resources Director Barbara Gibson, who toured Blue Ridge Community College
Cooper told a crowd of educators and students at T.C. Roberson High School about his proposed $130 million budget to help keep students and schools safe.

The proposed budget includes $40 million to fund 500 additional positions in public schools for nurses and counselors. The budget also included $10 million for school resource officers.

Cooper also spoke about what he called "common sense gun reform."
"No educator should ever have to stand in the way of a student and a person holding a dangerous weapon," Cooper said. "Last month, I called for common sense gun reform changes -- stronger background checks, tougher permit requirements, and age requirements," he added.
Students at the school also gave the governor a tour of their classes, including their drama, journalism, and cooking classes
