Frigid temperatures transform Pisgah National Forest into a winter wonderland
by Steve Wilder

PISGAH NATIONAL FOREST, N.C. (WLOS) — The recent frigid temperatures have created dangerous conditions, but they have also transformed the Pisgah National Forest into a breathtaking winter wonderland. Some visitors flock to the area to capture the stunning ice formations and frozen waterfalls.

"I wanted to try and get pictures of the ice formations along the waterfalls," said Laurie Lavrack of Hendersonville as she admired a frozen Looking Glass Falls. "The nature, the force of the water, I've always loved doing photography with water."

Just up the road, Mathew Brusche from Brevard and his three sons were enjoying the icicles that form along the rocks.

"Just getting a little energy out before they have to go to school," Brusche said. "Winters around here are unique in various ways. We like to come out here and find icicles. It's always something we do. I grew up in Wisconsin and saw a lot of stuff like this as a kid, but we don't get a lot of this around here."

Mathew Wittkopp of Pisgah Forest also appreciates the frozen waterfalls. "Just the formations as it's flowing down the wall, just a different season that not a lot of people get to enjoy," he said.

Lavrack added, "I could just sit here for hours and watch this."

With nearly 200 waterfalls in and around western North Carolina and plenty of winter weather left, there will be many more opportunities to enjoy the frozen beauty before spring arrives.
