Former Edneyville High School, and current Murphy High School, head football coach, David Gentry will be inducted into the National High School Athletic Association Coaches Association’s National Hall of Fame Class of 2019.
Word came over the weekend that a Western North Carolina high school football coach, very familiar to Henderson County high school football fans, has notched up yet another prestigious honor to his national belt of honors and awards....and recognizing one of the most successful high school footall coaching careers in history.
Former Edneyville High School, and current Murphy High School head football coach, David Gentry will be inducted into the National High School Athletic Association Coaches Association’s National Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
The legendary coach has already been inducted into the NCHSAA and WNC Hall of Fame.
The Class of 2019 will be inducted on June 25 in Bismarck, ND.
Gentry led Murphy to a 33-29 win over Mitchell on Friday night as the Bulldogs advanced to the regional final for the third straight year. They'll face Smoky Mountain Conference rival Robbinsville for a spot in the 1A state title game.
Gentry's 404 career wins are the second-most all-time in N.C. high school football history. National Hall of Famer Gentry is a graduate of Edneyville High School, where he was a four sport athlete...a running back and outside linebacker for the Yellowjackets..and he later coached there for nine seasons.
