FEMA Authorizes Federal Funds to Help Battle North Carolina Wildfire
ATLANTA – FEMA has authorized federal funds to reimburse costs to North Carolina to fight the Black Cove Complex fire in Polk County.
On March 22, 2025, state of North Carolina submitted a request for a Fire Management Assistance Grant for the Black Cove Complex fire. At the time of the request, the fire threatened more than 240 homes in and around Polk County. Approximately 138 homes have been evacuated.
The Black Cove Complex fire includes the Fish Hook, Deep Woods, Black Cove and May Bank fires. At the time of the request there were 10 other large fires burning uncontrolled within the state.
FEMA Region 4 Administrator Robert D. Samaan approved the state’s request on March 22, as the fire threatened to become a major disaster.
These grants provide federal funding for up to 75% of eligible firefighting costs. The Disaster Relief Fund provides allowances for Fire Management Assistance Grants through FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause major disasters. Eligible costs can include expenses for field camps, equipment use, materials, supplies and mobilization, and demobilization activities attributed to fighting the fire.
