Henderson County Public Schools (HCPS) is proud to recognize Erin McMunigle, a fifth-grade teacher at Sugarloaf Elementary, as the HCPS Outstanding Mathematics Teacher of the Year.

In her five years at Sugarloaf, McMunigle has become known for her innovative, hands-on approach to math instruction, ensuring students not only grasp but enjoy learning key concepts. Whether through engaging projects like calculating the volume of a class fish tank or leading after-school tutoring, McMunigle creates a learning environment that fosters growth and confidence in her students.

"Erin has a gift for making math accessible and fun," said Ashley Newcomer, Principal of Sugarloaf Elementary. "Her students thrive because she truly understands their individual needs and tailors her instruction accordingly."

McMunigle’s commitment to student success extends beyond the classroom. As a member of Sugarloaf’s Math Action Team, she collaborates with colleagues across grade levels to implement school-wide strategies that ensure consistency and excellence in math education.

McMunigle’s own experience as a student who once dreaded math has shaped her teaching philosophy. "I was classified as ‘not a math person’ in elementary school," she recalls, "but now my goal is to show my students that anyone can succeed at math."

"Erin’s dedication to improving math instruction is evident in everything she does," said Dr. Shannon Marlowe, HCPS Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. "Her ability to engage students with relevant, complex mathematical tasks allows every child to see themselves as mathematicians."

As recognition of her achievement, McMunigle will attend the NC Council of Teachers of Mathematics State Mathematics Conference in November 2024, where she will have the opportunity to further collaborate with educators across the state.
