Fire crews in Polk County are battling a second wildfire in the Piney Mountain community as they continue to fight the Black Cove wildfire.
Polk County emergency officials say the Deep Woods fire, located off Holbert Cove Road, has burned 50 acres and is 0% contained.
In a Wednesday night social media post, Polk County Fire & Rescue initially said several structures were threatened but later updated that the structures were protected.
Polk County officials said the cause of the Deep Woods fire is unknown and currently under investigation.
This comes as crews continue to battle the Black Cove wildfire near Green River Cove Road.
As of 8:48 a.m. Thursday, Polk County emergency officials said the fire had burned 200 acres and was at 0% containment, a change from a reported 10% containment on Wednesday evening.
Jason Guidry, an NC Forest Service spokesperson, explained the lower containment percentages to News 13.
"It wasn’t so much that containment was lost, it’s just the size of the fire relative to the areas," Guidry said. "We were really, really confident about that ratio changed overnight so it wasn’t so much for concern just sort of a natural progression.”
No structures have been damaged, and no evacuation orders are currently in place, according to an update by emergency officials.
"Dry weather, steep terrain, and winds overnight are making fire control efforts challenging," a post on the Polk County Emergency Management page said.
A N.C. Forest Service spokesperson said Wednesday that the Black Cove wildfire was caused by a downed power line near Green River Cove Road.
