A group of local veterans and their families are one step closer to taking to the skies as they wrap up their Blue Ridge Honor flight orientation.

The Blue Ridge Honor Flight is a local nonprofit that enables American veterans to travel to Washington, D.C., visiting the memorials dedicated to honoring the "service and sacrifices of themselves and their friends," according to their Facebook page. The group will be flying out to Washington, D.C. next week to see many of the memorials honoring our nation's veterans and visit historical sites across the city.

"It's well prepared — we've been doing this for 18 years," said Jeff Miller, founder of the Honor Air Network and Blue Ridge Honor Flight. "Great crew — we got great help in D.C., so it's a well-oiled machine."

Participants of the honor flight gathered at the Biltmore Church's Arden campus to learn the history of the program and about what to expect on their trip. Those included on the flight served in various wars including the Korean War, Vietnam and one veteran from Black Mountain who served in World War II.

"It's exciting," said Judy Warren, a participant. "I'm really having a nice time— there's a lot of people and a lot to do today."

News 13 will have more information on their flight when they return next week.
