MEADOWS GETS LATE CHALLENGER IN GOP PRIMARY FOR CONGRESS
Filing is now ended at the Henderson County Board of Elections...and here's what local voters are facing this year:
U.S. House
Clifton B. Ingram Jr. filed as the lone Libertarian candidate for Western North Carolina’s U.S. House of Representatives seat. He joins the others who have filed to run, including Republican incumbent Mark Meadows. Meadows is facing one opponent in the Republican primary for congress---Asheville developer Charles "Chuck" Archerd Three Democrats will face off in the May primary to see who gets the party’s bid for the seat: Scott Donaldson, Phillip Price and Steve Woodsmall.
Board of Commissioners
Three seats on the five-member Board of Commissioners will be on ballots this year. Only one seat is uncontested, the District 3 seat held by inumbent Commissioner Bill Lapsley, the lone candidate to file.
In District 1, incumbent Commissioner and Republican Mike Edney has no challenger from his own party, but two Democratic candidates, Pat Sheley and Michelle Antalec, have also filed.
Two Republicans, Don Ward and Rebecca McCall, will face off for the District 4 seat being vacated by incumbent Tommy Thompson.
Commissioner William Lapsley faces no opposition in District 3.
Henderson County School Board
Three of the seven seats on the board are up for election this year. Only one incumbent, Amy Lynn Holt, filed for re-election. She will run against Ted Beddingfield, Dot Case, Stacey Caskey, Jay Egolf and Randy Ward.
General Assembly
None of the local General Assembly races is uncotested, with each of the three Republican Henderson County representatives to the state legislatures getting a single Democratic opponent.
In the race for state Senate District 48, incumbent Republican Sen. Chuck Edwards will run against Democrat Norm Bossert in the November General Election.
For the N.C. House District 117 race, incumbent Republican Rep. Chuck McGrady has an opponent in Democrat Gayle Kemp, who filed Wednesday.
In the N.C. House District 113 race, Democrat Sam Edney will face incumbent Republican Rep. Cody Henson.
Henderson County sheriff
The race for sheriff will be decided in the May primary, as two Republican candidates have filed for the post — incumbent Sheriff Charles McDonald and Lowell Griffin.
District Aatorney
Another race to be decided in the primary is for District 42 district attorney. Incumbent Republican Greg Newman faces a challenge from fellow Republican Mary Ann Hollocker.
Register of deeds
Incumbent Lee King is the only candidate to file for the office.
Clerk of Superior Court
Kim Gasperson-Justice, current Henderson County clerk of Superior Court, is the lone candidate.
