MANY ROADS AND HIGHWAYS DAMAGED IN THE SALUDA TO TRYON AREA

NC DOT has had an on-going project of constructing retaining walls along some damaged roads and highways in Polk County...those that took the worst damage in the heavy rains, mudslides, and floods this spring.

Shep Cordray with NC DOT says they just completed work on Holbert Cove Road in Polk County, which had been heavily damaged by the weather, and that road is now open.

Cordray says that same work crew has moved to Fork Creek also in Polk County and there is about three weeks of work remaining on that road.

Then crews will be going to Pearson Falls and some remaining work on Highway 176.

He says traffic will not be closed on Highway 176 while that work is going on...traffic will be shifted but the road will remain open.

After work along Highway 176 is completed, Cordray says there is work to do repairing Green River Cove Road...”But we’re not even going to touch that one until after the World Equestrian Games come through.” There’s at least three weeks of work to do on that road.

Ncdot4

The heavy rains and subsequent flooding and mudslides did significant damage that still remains to many roads and highways in Polk County, particularly in the Saluda to Tryon area.

Three lives were lost as a result of those storms. One woman was trapped in a mudslide, and two WYFF TV news staff people were killed when a tree fell on their vehicle while reporting storm damage.
