Chimney Rock is opening to visitors for one day only - SATURDAY - DECEMBER 14th - to celebrate the Christmas season as well as the resilience of this North Carolina mountain town.
Hurricane Helene wiped out many buildings in this small village of around 150 people situated along the Broad River.
"Every single business has been either destroyed or severely damaged," Mayor Peter O'Leary told Fox Weather after Helene struck. "It's devastating. The whole community of Chimney Rock is changed forever."
Chimney Rock has since made progress in its recovery and will open to outsiders on December 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"With Christmas approaching, we would like to invite everyone to join us on a day of celebration, showing the world what a few short months can do when we join together," a post by Chimney Rock Brewing Co. says. "Come show your support and share the joy as we refresh the hope for a town so dearly loved."
Visitors can head to Main Street for pictures and toys with Santa, free food, goodies from newly renovated shops, and music, according to details shared by CityServe. The collaborative, faith-based network has helped restore 14 small businesses as well as donated emergency relief and supplies.
About 35 percent of the community relies on Main Street shops and small businesses for their livelihood. CityServe is taking donations to "Adopt A Shop" and help with further restoration of Chimney Rock.
Nearby Chimney Rock State Park is a popular tourist destination that remains closed for now.
